4.5 Irwell City Park Project
In May 2007 Manchester and Salford City Councils, Central Salford Urban
Regeneration Company and Trafford MBC, will submit a bid for £25 million to
the Living Landmarks Big Lottery Fund. This bid is to fund an urban city
park - stretching from The Quays through to Manchester City Centre and onto
Peel Park, close to Salford University. The project is being referred to as
Irwell City Park.
The vision for the Irwell City Park project is to transform the riverside
into an accessible, attractive and vibrant waterfront offering social and
economic benefits to neighbourhoods along the River. Irwell City Park will
provide people with:
• a riverfront destination
• a place to enjoy arts, culture, entertainment, sports and nature
• a way of getting round the cities
• a lively attractive place
• a place that is iconic and transformational
• a place to invest, to work and to visit
Throughout February 2007 we want to get resident's, businesses, community
groups and your views on this vision for the park. This will help us to put
forward a successful bid in May. If we are successful, then a full community
engagement programme will be developed for the life of the project (up to
five years.).
Its not just the city centre and areas around the Irwell who we need to
focus on. Its all residents as possible future users of this river. Its an
exciting project and a real chance to add another dimension to the city
centre. Getting views at this early stage will help shape the project right
from the start. We cant engage everyone in 4 weeks and a lot of this is
awareness raising. However this is engagement right at the start of the
project and it will develop throughout the life of the work.
People can give feedback by clicking on:

For general information, see www.irwellcitypark.info
People can also send general comments to Patrick Hanfling (or if they would
like more details) by mailto:p.hanfling@manchester.gov.uk or by phone on
