4.0 Information

4.1 A Sense of Place: An exhibition from the Community Comics Project with
ESOL Learners
A Sense of Place: See how it feels to arrive in Manchester and make it your
home. An exhibition from the Community Comics Project with ESOL (English for
Speakers of Other Languages) Learners from Chorlton Workshop. In Manchester
Central Library, First Floor Exhibition Area, St. Peter's Square, M2 5PD.
4th April - 4th May 2007.
This display of community grass roots comics is part of a City Council
Community Engagement Project talking to the people of Manchester about their
sense of place in their local area and in the city. The comics represent a
different way of engaging with local people; to find out answers to
interesting questions.
ESOL learners from community education centre Chorlton Workshop worked with
Community Comics trainers, including local artist and comics educator Jim
Medway, to produce this display of grass roots comics. The comics give us a
window into how it feels to arrive in Manchester and make it your home

4.2 Who's Your Neighbour Website
There is a new website which may help with social interaction where you
live. The website is called http://www.whosyourneighbour.co.uk/.
The idea behind the site is to help people open up a little and interact a
bit more with those living around them. We think the site will take a few
years to really get going, but the response so far has been very good. We
have members all over the UK and one or two are joining daily. We may not
have members in your area at this time, but as one person joins others will
soon follow.
Here are some points which can answer a few of your immediate questions:
The site is completely free to use.
Is protected under the data protection act.
We also allow schools, community groups, sports clubs, NHW schemes to join
in their own right. This gives them access to the notice board so they can
tell their community what it is they are doing.
4.3 Small organisations working with children and families survey.
The National Council for Voluntary Child Care Organisations (NCVCCO) have
been funded by the DfES to carry out a survey of small organisations working
with children, young people and families in order to discover how these
organisations are coping with the new aspects of the children's agenda,
including the new children's trusts arrangements.
They will use the results of the survey to inform their future work,
including developing tools that should help small organisations survive and
thrive in the changing world of children's services and working with local,
regional and national support organisations to tailor their services to the
needs of small organisations.

4.4 Friends of Route

Some of you may already be aware of the Friends of Route idea, it is aimed
at giving all that use a particular bus route a voice in how it is run,
maintained and impacts on their life.

It has attracted the interest of the different agencies and organisations
involved in service planning and provision, for example, Manchester City
Council, GMPTE, Stagecoach, First and the wider Community Network for
Manchester. This offers a real opportunity to influence.

To ensure we focus on realistic aims, and identify what we can offer we have
set up a steering group. The steering group will be meeting on April 13th to
look at drawing up a Terms of Reference. Initially we will be focusing on a
single route, and solely on the bus, we will invariably encounter issues
that may not be apparent to the steering group.

With this in mind I am offering you / your group the chance to get involved
or submit any issues for consideration, to include in the terms of
reference. For more information contact Bill Harrop, Transport Pool Convener
