4.0 Information

4.1 ITV 1 Series on Social Issues fronted by Ann Widdecombe - want to share
your view?
ITV1 have commissioned a series of films on social issues fronted by the MP
Ann Widdecombe. The first of this series is looking into the current
problems of prostitution in light of the recent events at Ipswich. Every
city has different approaches to dealing with the prostitutes and so we are
travelling across the UK to explore the different methods of policing the
trade. Ann Widdecombe is going onto the street to talk with prostitutes,
speak to the support groups, police forces and MPs to find out what the
current situation is and what is being done.

But the programme also wants to explore all the issues around the sex trade
not just the politics and legalities that accompany it. Ann is very keen to
meet with people who are affected by areas where prostitution is present and
the problems that it brings to residents and businesses. We want to get a
very personal look at the whole issue from various view points and are
hoping to get together a collection of residents to speak with Ann.

The aim of the programme is to discover the arguments for and against
legalised prostitution and try to determine what the best solution is for
the future for everybody.

4.2 Black Minority Ethnic (BME) women's experiences in the workplace in the
North West

Aim of the study:
The Centre for Equality and Diversity at Work, Manchester Business School in
collaboration with the European Social Fund are conducting a research study,
specifically aimed at examining the experiences of Black Minority Ethnic
(BME) women who have either experienced or witnessed (of another BME woman),
the following sexual harassment behaviours at work in the past five years:
• visual (leering);
• verbal (sexual teasing, jokes, comments or questions);
• unwanted pressure for sexual favours or dates;
• unwanted touching or pinching;
• unwanted pressure for sexual favours, with implied threats of job
• related consequences for non co-operation;
• physical assault;
• sexual assault.
Sexual harassment can take many forms including face-to-face, over the
telephone, (verbally or text based), and via email (Stanko, 1988)

Despite the importance of sexual harassment as a barrier to employment, very
little is known about the experiences of Black Minority Ethnic (BME) women.
In today's diverse society, an understanding of these issues is imperative,
to ensure that all vulnerable groups in the workplace are protected. It is
essential to understand BME women's experiences of sexual harassment as
developing this insight will help to ensure that effective workplace
policies and training are implemented and delivered, and that the largely
ignored issues of sexual harassment and BME women in UK organisations are
addressed.

Who are we looking for and what does it involve?
We are looking for Black Minority Ethnic (BME) women who live or have worked
in the North West who have experienced or witnessed (i.e. of another BME
female) any of the behaviours at work listed above in the past five years to
take part in a face to face interview or telephone with a trained,
experienced researcher, to discuss their experiences. We appreciate this is
a sensitive area and we are keen to assure participants that all information
will be confidential and anonymous. If you would like to participate in this
important, groundbreaking study, one of the project team will contact you to
arrange a convenient date, time and place to conduct the interview. We very
much value your participation and as an appreciation of this, we will make
the final report and recommendations available to you upon request.

If you are interested in participating in this rewarding study please

4.3 VOLUNTEERS WANTED TO ADVISE POLICE ON RACE ISSUES

The Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA), the governing body for
Greater Manchester Police (GMP), wants to recruit new members to a
county-wide independent advisory group (IAG) on race issues which has been
operating for just over a year.

The advisors will meet at least six times a year on a voluntary basis to
look at race issues relating to policing and must either live or work in
Greater Manchester.

People currently not represented on the group include those with Chinese,
Irish, eastern European and Arabic backgrounds as well as Gypsies,
Travellers, Asylum Seekers and Refugees. Women are also under-represented.
To make the IAG more inclusive, representatives from these groups and
communities are encouraged to apply.

The purpose of the IAG is to assess and evaluate the work of Greater
Manchester Police (GMP) in relation to race issues. The independent advisors
are not employed by the Police Authority. This ensures fairness and
neutrality in the work that is carried out, as well as impartial and
constructive critical advice.

These volunteers will be asked to suggest how the police service can be
improved and how the police can better work with people from different
racial communities to build trust and understanding. This may include
advising on any adverse impact a police operation may have on ethnic
minority groups, and how race hate crime is tackled.

Gloria Oates, Chair of the Community Engagement Committee at Greater
Manchester Police Authority said: "The Independent Advisory Group for race
issues has proved very effective over the past year and the members have
been involved in a variety of activities including anti-terror operations.
We now want to develop the group further and are aware some communities are
currently not represented. We're particularly keen to receive applications
from people with Chinese, Irish, eastern European or Arabic heritage. Women
from any ethnic group are also currently under-represented and therefore we
want to encourage them to get involved."

To apply to become a member of the Race Independent Advisory Group click on
or call 0161 793 3127 for an application pack. The
closing date for applications is 30 May 2007.
